Interlibrary Loan

Requesting Books and Articles through Interlibrary Loan

  • Make sure you have searched the Carmichael Library Catalog and that the book is not available.  Do this by typing in the title into the yellow Discovery box on the library's main page and clicking the boxes for "Available at UM Library" and "Books & DVDs."
  • Next, return to the main page and click "WorldCat" (in yellow box) and type in the title of the book.  You may be prompted to login or set up an account at this point.
  • Click the title of the book (which should be linked), then click "Request item through interlibrary loan."

  • Click the link for "Request through interlibrary loan."
  • Login or create an account if prompted.
  • The top field with information about the article will populate for you.  Scroll down to fill out the "About my request" section. Your "need by" date should be a month from the date of request.  The item will likely arrive much sooner than that, but this prevents any issues. 
  • Fill out the "Address and Contact Information" section.
  • Click "Submit Request." 
  • You'll receive an email confirmation. Instructions for accessing the article will be emailed to you within a few days. 

  • Login to WorldCat Discovery and search for your subject. You can use the link or the search box below to begin you WorldCat search.

  • Once results have populated, you may use the advanced search features on the left to narrow your results.
  • When you find an article or book you would like to borrow, click the title of the item.  This will take you to a screen that allows you to "Request item through interlibrary loan."
  • The top field with information about the book will populate for you.  Scroll down to fill out the "About my request" section. Your "need by" date should be a month from the date of request.  The item will likely arrive sooner, but this prevents any issues. 
  •  Fill out the "Address and Contact Information" section.
  • Click "Submit Request." 
  • You'll receive a confirmation and a notification when the book has arrived.
